Sewer Improvements

Efforts in phase one of the KW2023 Infrastructure Improvements were focused in two primary areas, flooding relief (sewer improvements) and water pressure improvements (water improvements).

Addressing the long-standing problems with sewage surcharging into our basements, streets and Lake Michigan during periods of moderate to heavy rain storms has been a primary focus of the KW2023 Infrastructure Improvements. After nearly a year of research, design, and public meetings a plan was identified to address flooding both now and for the future. To meet water quality requirements for Lake Michigan, the Village was required to undertake a modern approach to addressing our storm water. The approach involved utilizing several best practices in green infrastructure technology including the use of permeable pavers and bio-infiltration areas (rain gardens). The approach caught the attention of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) who offered to partner with us and fund $993,000 of green infrastructure improvements for the Cumberland, Roslyn and Melrose project. With the design substantially complete, the next step in the process is to solicit competitive bids for the project.
